AI's impact on Education.

AI: Embracing the Challenge.

AI is better than me at writing. Fact. This was my observation this week, and it was a moment I questioned everything. Why bother anymore?

Embarking on my writing career, I had assumed the competition to be Humans, which for all our greatness we do have our faults. With hard work, I believe excellence is possible.

However, we are now faced with an ultimate competitor. An AI machine that by the second is getting better. It’s quite a spectacular competitor that will dramatically change our lives.

During my moment of reflection, I asked what this all means for Children’s education. I mean, simply by asking AI the right question, the horrid homework is complete. Will children fall into the same trap as me, asking why bother to master skills like reading and writing?

AI Capabilities

Examining the current AI capabilities, I observe the most important skills required to get the most out of it are:

  1. Being able to ask great questions.
  2. Being able to interpret what information you get back from it.

Both these are fundamentally built on the skills of reading and writing. Without these, AI is like a blunt nail. More importantly, writing comes alive through personality. A perfect, machine-written piece, is dead without a human to bring it alive.

AI and Imagination

Furthermore, another part of the equation is human imagination- the reason why we are still roaming this planet. Humans have used our creativity with tools to develop all areas of life. And AI is not any different. It’s simply a new great tool. That if used correctly, can advance society. It can be used to accelerate learning.

Therefore, what are the crucial skills for developing imagination? Once again, it’s reading and writing. Imagine the possibilities of the human imagination, now superpowered with a tireless AI machine. It’s endless.

As the competition improves, so must we. We need to learn correctly how to use the AI tool, know its limitations and challenge its answers. This is where the argument for nurturing literacy skills remains as important as ever before. Children, parents and even myself should not forget this. AI may outmatch us technically, but it needs our creativity, for it to succeed.

Finally, what does this all mean for my writing? I believe it’s an exciting time for human expression. I’m now able to take my creativity to places I have only dreamed of doing. This has given me an even greater motivation, to master writing and storytelling. Most importantly, I can’t stop now. I’m having too much fun.
