I am happiest with a pencil and a pad in front of me. The reason, I believe is the total freedom I have. This is my playground, where I can’t be wrong. I can follow every thought and question to see where it takes me. I am like a Child, when they start writing or drawing, they just start to scribble away, not fearing any judgment.

My Secret Writing Process

However, what makes writing hard, is when we start to turn our internal world and open it up to others. Generally, this can be crippling. Moreover, the mind becomes bogged down trying to shape words to what you guess others will like. Actively practising a fearless approach to writing is the only way to ensure your writing does not become a chore.

Unquestionably, a book that has helped me to do this is The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. In essence, Julia recommends carrying out morning pages that are essentially three pages of a brain dump. These pages are not for anyone to see, or even for you to look at again. It can make sense or no sense. What you are practicing, is learning to free up any tension to allow your true creative self to shine.

For this reason, I love doing this and is really beneficial for me. No matter what happens, I always turn back to my pen and paper. By following this process I am actively freeing up space to allow me to have better creative ideas.

My advice to anyone who wants to try and is not used to writing daily is to start small. A sentence is good enough. Consistency is better than quantity. The key is to find your playground. And it’s never too early or too late to start.
